Virtual Venue BIENALSUR 2021 - Body, Archive and Collective Thought

Opening September 26th BIENALSUR 2021 opens a Virtual Venue specially designed for projects received in the international open call that involve an archival dimension in relation to bodies and collective thought. Its objective is to contribute to a democratization of knowledge through the great reach of digitality and with an emphasis on the generation of researches conveyed through artistic practice.  Each of the chosen projects was elaborated by artists, curators and the curatorial team of BIENALSUR specifically contemplating its exhibition in the Virtual Venue. All of them critically address key aspects of contemporary life, the present understood as a spectrum in which past-present-future converge; the tensions between emancipation-oppression that cross individual and collective bodies; creative intervention as an active agent of thought in the public sphere. The topics addressed include the impact of exile and migrations on architectural modernism, the political reflections and nostalgia of exiles in the present, the new ways of traveling the world through satellite images, the effect of the pandemic and the consequent confinement on artistic production and dreams, the generation of rumors and fake news as strategies of domination of neoliberalism, among many others. The crisis originated by the COVID-19 pandemic provoked the need to reinvent and imagine new possible ways of exhibition, circulation and dissemination of art. From BIENALSUR 2021 we intend to strengthen access to culture through the Virtual Venue, with the experiences of simultaneity and deterritorialization that this location implies. Each bubble in this space opens a universe of connections that trace new conceptual and operative cartographies.
