Critique of Pure Abstraction

From Tuesday, July 8, from Tuesday to Friday from 12 to 6 p.m.; Saturdays, from 2 to 6 p.m., except holidays.

In modernity, abstract art sought to break away from the concept of the “picture window” used to represent the world. By restricting its repertoire to strictly plastic elements —line, dot, colour, plane, texture—abstraction aimed to eliminate references to reality, thereby relinquishing figurative representation and the subordination of the work to a ‘theme’. In its quest for absolute autonomy, modern abstraction strove for the union of art and life, generated a rich legacy of experiences and research that contemporary artists now draw upon.

Today, the canon of abstract art is being revisited and reinterpreted by artists who—far from the purism and antagonisms between poetics that characterised modernity—navigate a plurality of aesthetic approaches introducing urgent issues and questions of our contemporary world into the language of abstraction.
