On Tuesday, July 27, with the presence of the Argentine ambassador to Spain Ricardo Alfonsín and the President of the Malaga Provincial Deputation Francisco Salado, La Térmica’s Director Salomón Castiel and the Directors of BIENALSUR Aníbal Jozami and Diana Wechsler inaugurated, in the center of contemporary culture of Malaga, the first BIENALSUR 2021 exhibition in Spain: TO THE SOUTH OF THE SOUTH. Curated by Diana Wechsler, the exhibition brings together, through two chapters -DISSIDENT CARTOGRAPHIES and ZOO-, works by four Latin American female artists who redesign cartographies that shed light on invisible realities, developing a situated way of thinking, “from the south”. DISSIDENT CARTOGRAPHIES presents works by Uruguayan Paola Monzillo and Argentines Graciela Sacco and Agustina Woodgate that constitute a hint of alternative ways when faced with the question of what happens when we revise the historically established conventions for the representation of spaces, territories and positions in, for instance, maps. On the other hand, in the research essay ZOO, Chilean Voluspa Jarpa chooses to place, in the planisphere, the cities where the exhibitions so-called human zoos were carried out, a practice of colonial affirmation and delineation of racism used in Europe from 1815 until 1958, thus highlighting the sustained management of a colonial policy that sought to assert itself in the "common sense" of Western European society parting from the construction of a different "other" which would be legitimate to bring under.
The exhibition is open for visitation, with the corresponding health protocols, until November.
