The program launched on October 15 at the Joburg Contemporary Art Foundation Km 8087, with the opening of (Re)writing Memories, featuring Beacons by Jasmina Cibic (SVK). The film revisits speeches delivered at the first conference of cultural workers from the Non-Aligned Movement, held in Yugoslavia in 1985, now reinterpreted through the voices of eight women. Filmed in symbolic locations such as balconies and monuments, these speeches take on a distinctly feminist tone that challenges traditionally patriarchal spaces of power.
On October 30th, Our Wandering Continents opened at the Origins Centre of the University of the Witwatersrand Km 8086. The exhibition is the result of a BIENALSUR-supported artist residency undertaken by Marcela Cabutti (ARG), who explored the theory of continental drift. Drawing inspiration from the possible contact between the Río de la Plata and Kalahari cratons, Cabutti created a diverse body of work—from small organic sculptures to fragrances crafted from native plants of Argentina and South Africa.
Since October 31th, visitors can experience To the Registrar. Pasts and Presents in Tension at Constitution Hill Km 8088, where Sally Gutiérrez Dewar (ESP) intervenes in the spaces, inspired by Constitution Hill’s legacy as a symbol of South African freedom and a landmark on the Nelson Mandela Legacy Route.
On November 1st, Home - Ikhaya, an installation by Diego Masera (ARG), was inaugurated at the NIROX Sculpture Park, Km 8077. Ironically situated in the so-called “Cradle of Humankind,” the work highlights the resilience and dignity of those living in precarious conditions and informal settlements, reflecting on the distinction between a house and a home.
