On October 16th, the BIENALSUR 2025 program began in Mexico City with the opening of Divisa at the Museo Banco de México Km 7395. The exhibition features an installation by Augusto Zanela (ARG), conceived specifically for this space. Playing on the dual meaning in Spanish of the title — both foreign currency and to look into the distance — Zanela constructs monetary symbols out of neon tubes, reflecting on vision as a tool for positioning oneself in the world and on the dynamics of the currency exchange market.
On October 18th, Talking Threads. Textile Traditions in Contemporary Art opened at Fundación Marso Km 7393. Curated by BIENALSUR, the exhibition brings together artists Beatriz Morales (MEX) and Alejandra Mizrahi (ARG), both exploring traditional textile techniques from communities displaced during colonial times. Working with fibers, yarns, and dyed wools, their pieces address questions of identity and share, through art, the living history of these peoples.
The BIENALSUR 2025 program then continued in Oaxaca, where on October 23th three exhibitions were inaugurated at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo y de las Culturas Oaxaqueñas MACCO, Km 7030. The video program Displaced Voices curated by BIENALSUR brings together audiovisual works that explore themes of territory, migration, violence, colonialism, and resistance, featuring pieces by Adrián Schindler (FRA/DEU), Florencia Rojas (ARG/ESP), and Jumana Manna (PSE). In Exercises for Making a Place, by artist Julia Levstein (ARG) paper becomes the central material — highlighting its remarkable ability to create space despite its apparent fragility. The exhibition was curated by BIENALSUR. Finally, A Common Thread: International Textile Collaboration featured a gathering of weavers combining traditional techniques with contemporary practices. Curated by Greta de León (MEX) and Dorothea Schöne (DEU), the exhibition brought together artists Munara Abdukaharova (KGZ), Sary Haddad (MEX), Ana Hernández (MEX), Jenny Michel (DEU), Jessica Ostrowicz (GBR), Mariana Pende (HRV), Haleh Redjaian (DEU), and Anna Schapiro (DEU).
