BIENALSUR

BIENALSUR is the International Biennial of Contemporary Art of the South; an extensive platform for art and culture in permanent construction. It is organized by the National University of Tres de Febrero (UNTREF), an Argentine public university in Buenos Aires.

The project builds a community that claims the right to culture with the conviction that, from it, it is possible to give visibility to other rights. Artists, curators and institutions of the world come together to redouble actions and dynamically assume contemporary challenges and invite us to imagine possible futures together. BIENALSUR simultaneously connects audiences, artists, curators and spaces from the five continents. A global network of associative collaboration that contributes to shorten distances and borders –both real and symbolic- and defends uniqueness in diversity, the local within the global.

With biannual processes, the first edition was held in 2017, when a plural cartography that reached venues in the five continents was presented, something that became one of the identities of its horizontal, democratic work: 16 countries, 34 cities, more than 80 venues and more than 400 artists and curators were part of BIENALSUR 2017. In 2019, the map expanded to 112 venues in 47 cities in 21 countries and incorporated proposals from more than 800 artists and curators. In 2021, the third edition brings together more than 400 artists in 120 venues in more than 40 cities in 24 countries on five continents.

The exhibitions are held in different museums, cultural centers, buildings and emblematic areas part of the public space of different cities with the purpose of generating a global network of institutional associative collaboration that eliminates distances and borders and that claims uniqueness in diversity.

With its own cartography, a specific territory and route, BIENALSUR opens up to an expanded South almost on a planetary scale that brings together artists and curators from the five continents. The map has as its KM 0 the MUNTREF (UNTREF’s Museum of Immigration and Contemporary Art Center) in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and expands in all directions, redesigning circuits, dialogues and interactions from off-center perspectives.
