Artists In the Centre:

Panel discussion with artists who have chosen Madrid as a centre or base Wednesday, November 26th   BIENALSUR holds an international open call every two years. This key initiative broadens horizons and strengthens exchanges among artists, curators, and institutions. With the aim of linking the experiences and productions of artists from different countries currently based in Madrid, a group of participants from the current call and others who took part in previous editions was selected, thereby joining the network that BIENALSUR expands in each edition. The artists gathered for this panel discussion are organized around two topics. The first is a reflection on Latin America's colonial past and present, intertwining the social, political and economic dimensions of the colonizing process, the emergence of nation-states, 20th-century dictatorships and endemic migratory movements. To this end, they draw on historical archives, the imaginaries of the “idyllic” landscape and a conception of nature as a commodity, along with the power of objects, language and image as catalysts of memory. This latter aspect is connected to the second topic, which delves into the qualities of spatiality and architecture as concepts that inform our understanding of corporeality, as well as our physical, psychological and social perception. The artists therefore conceive of space in a broad and complex way, focusing on the properties of sound, the sensitivity of materials, and the ephemeral quality of what is visible.
