Fragmenting Obsolescence. Silent Spring

Opening: Saturday July 12th, 3 p.m   Silent Spring is inspired by scientist Rachel Carson's pioneering book of the same name (1962), which denounced the devastating impact of pesticides on ecosystems. Carson imagined an alarming future: a world where birds no longer sing, where life cycles are interrupted. Over half a century later, that scenario is still - and increasingly so - our present. Silent Spring draws on that silence as an anomaly through which to observe, listen to, and reflect on a sonic and vital presence on the brink of extinction: birds. In this exhibition, which also features a large installation in the museum’s main hall, the artworks do not merely evoke birds; they also use their lost song to raise questions such as: Is there a connection between extinction and obsolescence? From the ecological ruins of the present, what technologies are left behind as certain forms of life vanish? Obsolescence then manifests in various ways. On the one hand, there is the presence of technologies already in disuse alongside contemporary scientific developments. On the other, there is ecological obsolescence, where natural resources become disposable once depleted for the sake of capital. Finally, a symbolic dimension emerges by showcasing ways of looking at, representing, and codifying nature that reveal their cracks when confronted with the present. This exhibition poses a question: what disappears and what remains when certain sounds become extinct?
