The BIENALSUR 2021 online sessions are conceived and developed as the new version of the Global South Meetings. Considering the sanitary emergency that the world is currently facing, due to which meetings in person are not possible, BIENALSUR's proposal is to continue working by creating spaces of discussion and reflection that allow us to envisage a better future for the world of art and culture.
Under the slogan Thinking possible futures, State of Affairs, the 1st session on May 9th, aimed to take into consideration the current uncertainty, which leads each activity to consider a post-pandemic scenario and the extent to which it will affect their continuity, considering that the worst thing that could happen to us would be to return to "normality", as if nothing had happened. As regards the specific field of art, such a course of action would entail missing a chance to review how far this world has deviated from the right to culture, which is one of the human rights that lies at the heart of our work.
The conversation of the 2nd Meeting - held on May 23rd under the motto Thinking possible futures. Imagination, ways of seeing, perspectives - focused on cultural notions associated to the construction of visualities and practices, of new perspectives that enable the possibility of turning art spaces and experiences into a place for critical thinking. The objective was to engage once again in crossover dialogues, as BIENALSUR has proposed since the beginning, to address some of the ideas that led us to design and develop a project that seeks to establish other rules of the game, upholding diversity, working in solidarity and collaboration with each other, building a possible "us" in the encounter between the different; that is, between all of us.
The 3rd Online session towards BIENALSUR 2021, which will close the first cycle of this series of meetings under the motto Thinking possible futures. Narratives of the present, will focus on the narratives that have unfolded over the last months, particularly since February, in order to explore ways of reflecting upon / explaining this present – an updated vision of future fantasy literature.
