Opening: Wednesday, December 3rd, 7 p.m This proposal is designed specifically for the Instituto Cervantes, based on a reconsideration of the spaces of representation, writing, reading, language, the symbolic, and their contributions to the construction of identities. This is not a project concerned with translation strictu sensu; however, the work conceived by Julián Pesce for the outdoor space of the Instituto Cervantes in Shanghai revisits the question through the problem of representation and its materialities. The starting point is a series the artist developed from the fragmented memory of a landscape in southern Chile—Pucón—which he visited with his mother, the sculptor Mariana Schapiro, who created works connected to that place. “Twenty years later,” the artist points out, “I decided to revisit that landscape using modular graphic pieces. The idea of translation relates to what is acquired, what is lost, and what remains when changing materialities to express a similar idea.” The landscape—depicted in black and white and carved into a material resistant to the outdoors, which allows the gazes of the hundreds of daily visitors to pass through—is situated in an entirely different time and space. The landscape, transformed into a graphic sign, into writing, is available to be reconstructed by a multitude of viewers who, through the work—in this translation—will envision other landscapes using their own references and visualities.
