Voices, Gestures, Translations

From Thursday, November 6th Specially prepared for the Cervantes Institute in Bordeaux, this project focuses on the work of Leticia Obeid, an artist whose practice “unfolds in a diverse territory where language, the word, and its relationship with the image are always present.”

“Memory, languages, forms of speech, translations between different worlds, communication problems, the impact of reading on the perception of reality, the most basic act of writing and its material trace are some of the recurring tropes.” In this case, the project addresses the modes of translation that emerge in the transnational circulation of the performing arts, theatre, and cinema.

Voices are transvested, gestures–at times–become disjointed from sound, and the expressiveness of one language disconnects from the gestures of those expressing themselves in another. We could say that translations constrain meaning, but seen in another light, they may offer an opportunity to expand it. This exhibition is about just that: rethinking the migration of meaning through the relationship between voices and gestures.
