Opening: Thursday, August 7, 12 p.m (PER)
The visual arc outlined by Lorena Noblecilla in this exhibition is notably broader and more encompassing than her reflection on nature in her previous solo show, titled Lesson in Natural History (2023). While much of her focus then was firmly placed on matter, it now shifts to energy—particularly light energy. This exhibition is visually defined by green as a prominent colour, present both in the use of fluorescent paint in a few pictorial works and in a vision of the Amazon rainforest captured in her photography—a vivid testament to a kingdom of chlorophyll, which captures light and transforms it into nourishment.
These are times not only to thoroughly reflect on the difference between the states of matter and the distance between things and their duration over time, but also to seek an understanding of the reasons behind the distance between them and us—and between ourselves. Why? To reinvent ourselves in imagination and spirit, to move from numen to symbol. To attempt this within, and for the brief moments allotted to each of us on the surface of the planet.
To reconsider our place in the galaxy and take responsibility for the lasting impact of our insatiable drive to degrade and exploit everything within reach, we must begin to look—and to project— in the opposite direction of what entails destruction and the annihilation of the Earth. To recentre the intentionality of human agency in the world can only be a mental movement—an imaginary projection. Yet it may redeem the agon and shed light on the ethos.
