Angelika Markul is born in 1977 in Poland. She lives and works between Paris and Warsaw. She recently received the Coal Prize, awarded an artist’s pratice between art and environment. She graduated from the Ecole nationale supérieur des Beaux-Arts de Paris.
Angelika Markul’s artistic practice has always been rooted and interested in places that are missing, unknown or dangerous. Combining the real facts and the fiction or science fiction, her latest film projects took her, for example, to the south of Japan, on the island of Yonaguni to discover a monument buried under the sea whose exact origine is still unknown. Her last film « The memory of the Glaciers » extend a reflexion initiated over more than two years questioning memory, bodies and places as well as the destruction or the cycle of life. Progressing between those paradoxal points, her artistic approach is always motivated by the desire to capture the images but also to carve them and make visible what is obscure and/or hidden. Angelika Markul is represented by Leto gallery, Warsaw, Poland ; and Solo gallery, Madrid, Spain.
