Supeo

Opening: Friday, January 16, 10 am

BIENALSUR, as a platform for art, culture, and thought, unfolds different kinds of dynamics in relation to the various contexts and actors it works with, seeking to construct, within each project, a shared or common space.

It is within this framework that the encounter between Chimène Costa (ARG/MOZ)—dancer, actress, researcher, and director of the organization Connecting Communities & Cultures—and Sally Gutiérrez Dewar (ESP)—visual artist, non-fiction filmmaker, and researcher—takes place.

Following their initial meetings, both artists began an epistolary correspondence and an exchange of materials, reading one another, narrating fragments of their lives and projects, and discovering coincidences and shared interests. From this process emerged a series of sound, text, and image collages that reinterpret these materials. The exhibition enters into dialogue with two videos by Sally: Application (2025), based on South Africa’s application to the International Court of Justice against Israel for genocide, and Obsequio (2025), which arose from a workshop in which participants offered a gift to the Carrión River—in northern Spain—juxtaposing these offerings with the life that exists along the river’s course.

Supeo (mirror in Makua) is the title of the exhibition, which brings together this first phase of encounter and research. It emerges from shared vulnerabilities and quests, from conversations about pain, loss, recovery, and resistance; from discussions on power structures and alternative ways of creating culture and sustainable forms of sociability; and from approaches to the waters of the Indian Ocean in Nacala as a site of life, conflict, and healing.
