Breathing Tower

Opening: Tuesday, August 26th, 7 p.m  As we know, breathing is a vital function. However, in the current installation at the entrance space of the MNBA, the breathers in this tower incorporate additional symbolic dimensions. A metal structure redefines the environment, delineates a space, and irregularly and unevenly houses some of the breathing volumes, each with its own orientation, yet all in unison. This presence emphasizes the cultural space as a place to breathe—where one exercises one of the essential needs for the unfolding of specific and diverse social practices, open to a variety of individuals. Each spectator who breathes within the museum space takes in a different air: not all of us feel challenged in the same way by a given artwork, an exhibition, or by moving through a particular space. Thus, situating the act of breathing within the museum experience invites us to reconsider the relationship between time and rhythm proposed by Reinoso. Here, time and rhythm burst and multiply, creating new logics and, together with them, new narratives. In any event, this work’s presence emphasizes that if breathing is a vital necessity, so is cultural experience. Hence, in a space to be discovered again and again, the artwork becomes yet another key to decipher. Diana Wechsler
