Beautiful Wounds

Opening: Saturday August 23th, 6 p.m In this new series, Belén Rodríguez uses textiles as materials imbued with memory and affection. Her intervened pieces were cut, filled, stretched, cracked open, or covered in layers. Their surfaces are decorated with shiny plastic appliqués and fake red stones –elements that evoke beautiful, almost ritualistic wounds. The work is permeated by persistent images from the artist’s life, marked by a deeply religious family environment. Recurring symbols appear throughout: the home, pain, blood, and bleeding. These elements point to the romanticization of suffering, mainly through a religious lens, though not exclusively. In this universe, women were taught to endure for love, duty and virtue. This sacrifice was aesthetically codified as “beautiful”. Here, textiles represent warmth and protection, though also confinement through the repetition of inherited gestures. Much like a second skin or an extension of the body, textiles provide both comfort and oppression.
