Verse and Reverse

Opening: Saturday, July 26th 5 p.m.

The artistic production of Rodrigo Vergara, featured at the Sívori Museum as part of BIENALSUR 2025 and for the first time in the city of Buenos Aires, reflects a sustained and prominent presence within the contemporary Chilean art scene. His works explore post-conceptual artistic languages, employing a wide range of visual culture formats rooted in an expanded conception of etching, record culture, audiovisual media, installations, graphic formats, and printed and editable materials. The exhibition Verse and Reverse proposes an exploration of memory through the investigation of popular culture and its presence in music, focusing on the formation of mixed-race identity and its construction through collective cultural expression.

Rodrigo Vergara’s early contact with conceptual artists and critics from the avant-garde Chilean scene, as well as his interest in music, has brought into his work a series of mediations that enable him to approach aspects of Chile’s political history—much like many of his conceptual predecessors (such as Gonzalo Díaz and Eugenio Dittborn, to name a few)—or to use a post-punk song to express a vital impulse that informs his critique. Since the Spring Salon (Salón de Primavera) in 1999, Rodrigo Vergara has undertaken not only an individual practice but also a collective one alongside José Pablo Díaz—with projects like Hoffman’s House and Los Nuevos Sensibles (The New Sensitives)—and has presented works at biennials and galleries around the world. Additionally, he has participated in a series of gatherings, residencies, group exhibitions, and curatorial endeavours, comprising more than twenty years of experience in cultural management.
