Poetry jam, pavement drawings, tango and chess lessons at the Marcel Duchamp and Francisco Canaro tribute

BIENALSUR 2019, the second edition of the cultural event of contemporary art from Argentina to the world, once again participates in the cycle of homage to Marcel Duchamp and Francisco Canaro, with a series of activities that start on September 10 and culminate on Friday October 10 from 16hs, with a big celebration in front of the house on Alsina Street where, at the beginning of the 19th century, the French artist - considered the father of conceptual art - and the Uruguayan composer of tangos were neighbors. Organized by the Universidad Nacional de Tres de Febrero (UNTREF), the biennial unfolds across the globe, simultaneously, until November, with exhibitions and actions by 400 artists in more than 100 venues - with which it works jointly and collaboratively - in 43 cities in 20 countries.

After an intense series of activities starting on September 10 and including seminars, poetry readings and live orchestras, the tribute cycle to Duchamp and Canaro will have its central celebration on October 10, starting at 4 p.m., at Alsina Street between Combate de los Pozos and Solís, where the most influential artist of the 20th century lived for nine months, between 1918 and 1919, in the heart of the Congreso district.

Not knowing exactly why, one hundred years ago the irreverent French genius arrived in these lands,  and he stayed in an apartment on 1743 Alsina Street. Here, he devoted most of his time to playing chess after joining a local chess club, and had his workshop on 1507 Sarmiento Street, where the dry square of the San Martín Cultural Center is now located.

To celebrate the anniversary of this famous neighborhood, the tribute will be held from September 10 to October 11, a date that will culminate with an intense agenda of activities that includes the artist Ezequiel Levicka, who will have as the "canvas" of his drawings the pavement of the street, seeking to connect what was Duchamp's home with the facilities of the Cultural Space of the Library of the Congress (BCN).

There will also be a drawing Jam in the public space in charge of the BCN, while simultaneously chess matches will be carried out with the students of the diploma of the Universidad Nacional de Tres de Febrero and the Chess Federation. Chess boards will be placed on the street, game pieces designed by Duchamp, and other related activities.

The Library of the Congress choir will also perform in the foyer of the Espacio Cultural, there will be an artistic intervention in the same place and 3D experiences and serigraphs.

In the tribute to Canaro, there will be tango classes in Alsina Street 1700 in which members of the Ballet of the School of Tango and Traditional Dances and the Diploma in Teaching Tango Dance of the UNTREF will participate, together with its directors Lilia Pinasco and Martín Adler. Finally, the mural of the artist Francois Avelanet, painted last year in the party wall of the house where Duchamp lived, sponsored by the French Embassy, will be illuminated.

The tribute cycle is organized by UNTREF, within the framework of BIENALSUR, together with the French Embassy, the Library of Congress, the consulting firm Fajre & Asociados with its volunteers, and residents in the area. The initiative has the collaboration of cultural magazine Ñ, Asociación Comerciantes Entre Ríos, Unión Cívica Radical, Federación Metropolitana de Ajedrez, Club Obras Sanitarias, Total, FUC Universidad del Cine, Bar Oscar, AANBA.
