Totem Tabu is a group made up of Hernán Soriano, Malena Pizani and Laura Códega which has been working since 2014 to investigate issues linked to the origin of specific prohibitions with the aim of shedding light on the realm of knowledge and ideology censored by history. The purpose is to see how such a dialectic is able to survive in present-day society. The group analyzes power structures, what is forbidden or marked out as taboo, or heresy, to drive reflection on morality, law and religion. Piras, which was especially developed for BIENALSUR and the Parque de la Memoria, harks back to an investigation into the origins of the witch figure, its repercussions in South America and how it affects the present. In the exhibition space are different pyres erected as situations designed to prompt critical and autonomous thought, and question the reigning canon of narrative.
