Anna Mariani

Anna Mariani (born 1935, Rio de Janeiro) is a renowned Brazilian photographer focused on documenting popular architecture, culture, and everyday life in northeastern Brazil. Known for her series of photographs of facades and architectural details of popular houses, Mariani captured the diversity and creativity of these structures in books like Pinturas e Platibanda (1987) and Façades (1988). Her work not only reveals the beauty of northeastern architecture but also reflects life in adverse conditions without aestheticizing poverty. In 1992, she published Paisagens, Impressões - O Semi-Árido Brasileiro, a series of photographs showcasing the scarcity of resources and the resilience of communities in the arid regions of northeastern Brazil. Her work has been exhibited in prominent museums such as the São Paulo Museum of Modern Art and the São Paulo International Biennial.
