Daido Moriyama
Born in Osaka in 1938, Daido Moriyama revolutionized Japanese photography with his raw, experimental style. Influenced by Provoke, he challenged technical precision with grainy, blurred images.
His work explores Japan’s industrialization and urban transformation after World War II. Inspired by Andy Warhol, he embraced repetition and reproduction, questioning the role of media in shaping reality.
His tights and lips series became iconic, symbolizing the Americanization of Japanese culture and the rise of eroticism in advertising. In 2023-2024, his retrospective was featured at C/O Berlin and The Photographer’s Gallery, with a publication by Prestel.
