Dieter Appelt

Dieter Appelt (born 1935, Niemegk) is a German photographer, painter, sculptor, and video artist. Initially trained in music in Leipzig, he shifted to visual arts in 1964, exploring painting, photography, and sculpture. His artistic career took off in the 1970s, with his first exhibition at Deutsche Oper Berlin (1974). In the 1980s, he gained recognition for his innovative studies on the mechanics of photography. He participated in the Venice Biennale in 1990 and 1999, and his work has been exhibited in Tokyo, New York, Berlin, Moscow, Budapest, Montreal, and Edinburgh. Currently, he lives and works in Berlin, standing as a key figure in contemporary photography and experimental visual art.
