Deborah Benzaquen
Déborah Benzaquen is a Moroccan photographer and visual artist born in Casablanca whose practice combines photography, moving image and installation. Her work is strongly influenced by cinema and explores poetic narratives through characters that move between reality and fiction. After studying in Paris and New York, she decided to dedicate herself fully to photography during her time in the United States. Initially recognized for her elegant and nostalgic black-and-white photography, her practice later evolved toward a vibrant use of color following her return to Casablanca. Benzaquen develops photographic series that investigate emotional fragility, identity and the narrative construction of characters. In recent years, her work has expanded into multimedia staging that integrates music, video and installation. Her work has been exhibited internationally in cities including New York, Paris, Tokyo, Marrakech, Rabat and Casablanca. She participated in the Rabat International Biennale (2019) and the official program of the 1:54 Contemporary African Art Fair in Marrakech. Her work has also appeared in books and publications dedicated to contemporary art and photography.
