Maia Gattás Vargas
Maia Gattás Vargas is a visual artist, filmmaker, researcher and professor. She holds a PhD in Arts from the National University of La Plata (UNLP), specializing in Latin American Contemporary Art, and was a CONICET doctoral and postdoctoral fellow (2016–2025).
Her practice operates at the intersection of contemporary art, science, landscape and colonial history, combining documentary film, installation, artistic research and site-based methodologies. In 2022 she published Diario de exploración al territorio del color.
Her first feature documentary, Viento del este (2023), premiered at Doc Buenos Aires and at the Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival (Czech Republic), where it received the Original Approach Award. The film also won Best Film at Córdoba Film Festival and Festifreak, and screened at international festivals across Latin America, Europe and Canada.
She is currently developing Atmospheric Inquiries, initiated during the Situated Research Residency at Medialab Matadero (Madrid). Her work has been exhibited at Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires, Centro Cultural Kirchner, Fundación OSDE and the Argentine Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale.
