Allora & Calzadilla
Allora & Calzadilla is the artist duo composed of Jennifer Allora (Philadelphia, 1974) and Guillermo Calzadilla (Havana, 1971), based in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Since 1995 they have developed a collaborative practice integrating sculpture, performance, sound, video, and photography to critically examine systems of power, colonial histories, and contemporary geopolitical conditions.
Notable projects include Land Mark (2001–2002), addressing the island of Vieques after decades of military occupation; Stop, Repair, Prepare: Variations on “Ode to Joy” for a Prepared Piano (2008); and Track and Field (2011), presented when they represented the United States at the 54th Venice Biennale.
They have held major solo exhibitions at Haus der Kunst, Munich (2012); Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid (2012); Serpentine Gallery, London (2011); Kunsthalle Zürich (2007); and the Indianapolis Museum of Art (2010), among others. Their work has also been shown at Tate Modern and MoMA. Their research-driven practice bridges political history, institutional critique, and formal experimentation within international contemporary art discourse.
