Igshaan Adams

Igshaan Adams (Cape Town, South Africa, 1982) is an internationally recognized contemporary artist known for his textile installations, sculptures and drawings exploring identity, spirituality, memory and belonging. He lives and works in Cape Town and received a Diploma in Fine Art from the Ruth Prowse School of Art in 2009. His practice combines craft-based techniques—such as weaving, stitching and material assemblage—with conceptual approaches that reflect on the intersections of race, religion, sexuality and community in South Africa and beyond. Through textile surfaces, tapestries and hybrid sculptural forms, Adams creates abstract landscapes inspired by everyday movement and spatial memory, transforming intimate gestures into powerful visual narratives. Adams has presented solo exhibitions at major institutions including The Art Institute of Chicago, Kunsthalle Zürich, the Hayward Gallery in London, the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston and Mudam Luxembourg. His work has been included in significant international exhibitions such as the Venice Biennale (2022) and the São Paulo Biennial (2023), and is held in collections including the Museum of Modern Art (New York), Tate (London), the Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam) and LACMA (Los Angeles).
