Itziar Okariz
Itziar Okariz (San Sebastián, 1965) is a Basque contemporary artist working in performance, video, and installation. Trained in sculpture and painting at the Universidad del País Vasco, her practice engages with the conceptual and anti-capitalist legacy of the Internacional Situacionista. She has lived and worked between New York and Bilbao.
Her work examines social norms regulating the body, language, and gender in public space. Through formally precise and minimal actions, she challenges moral conventions and symbolic structures shaping contemporary subjectivity. Repetition, voice, and physical presence are central elements in her artistic research.
She has presented solo exhibitions at MUSAC Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León, Kunsthaus Baselland, Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo, and Tabakalera Centro Internacional de Cultura Contemporánea. Her performances have been shown at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía and Museu Picasso Barcelona. Her work is included in major collections such as the Museo Guggenheim Bilbao and the MACBA Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona.
