Simão Cardoso Pereira

Simão Cardoso Pereira, known as Mong, is a visual artist born in 1983 in Viqueque, Timor-Leste, currently based in Dili. Trained at Arte Moris Free Art School and through visual arts programs in Australia and Indonesia, he works across painting, digital imaging, collage, installation, and photomontage. His practice addresses social and cultural issues in Timor-Leste, emphasizing identity, memory, and tradition. Mong exhibited internationally between 2003 and 2014 in Timor-Leste, Australia, Switzerland, Indonesia, and the United States. He won the inaugural Fundação Oriente Visual Arts Award in 2023 and directed the documentary Identity (2021), later presented at Biennale Jogja XVI. His work was featured in Hasoru Malu – Timor 20+ (2022). He actively curates and promotes contemporary Timorese art through the Hasoru Malu initiative.
