Dzata: The Institute of Technological Consciousness: [Russel Hlongwane (ZAF) & Lo-Def Film Factory: Francois Knoetze (ZAF), Amy Wilson (ZAF)]

Dzata: The Institute of Technological Consciousness is a creative research project by South African artists Russel Hlongwane, Francois Knoetze, and Amy Louise Wilson. Through the invention of a fictional institute and its media archive, the artists reimagine African vernacular technologies, linking science, innovation, and spirituality through indigenous knowledge. Blending poetry and documentary, the work preserves and activates a technocultural legacy. Inspired by technopolitical research, it proposes a multi-scalar history of African development as a self-shaped process. Supported by the Mozilla Foundation’s 2022 Creative Media Award.
