Cecilia Barriga

Cecilia Barriga (Concepción, Chile, 1957) is a prominent Spanish-Chilean filmmaker, screenwriter, and audiovisual producer. Since 1982, she has explored feminism, identity, and global social movements through video art, documentary, and fiction. Her work has been showcased at major institutions like MoMA, Reina Sofía, and Guggenheim. Exiled to Spain in 1977, she studied Image and Sound at the Complutense University of Madrid and continued her training at EICTV (Cuba) and Columbia University (USA). Her most notable works include Encounter Between Two Queens (1990-91), a landmark queer cinema piece; Three Moments, One Scream (2013), capturing the 15M, Arab Spring, and Occupy Wall Street; and The Path of Moisés (2003), addressing transgender identity. Barriga’s work intertwines gender, memory, and political activism, using experimental forms to reflect on human rights, feminism, and queer experiences. She has participated in international film festivals such as San Sebastián and exhibited in renowned contemporary art venues worldwide.
