Hernán Illescas

Hernán Illescas is an Ecuadorian visual artist known for his extensive career in painting, drawing and ceramic mural production. A graduate in Fine Arts from the University of Cuenca, he has developed a four-decade artistic trajectory exploring historical memory, cultural identity and symbolic narratives of diverse civilizations. His work is characterized by large-scale abstract paintings created with the sgraffito technique, intricate ink drawings and murals that reflect influences from Mexican muralism, European expressionism and Andean indigenous culture. Illescas has held more than 60 solo exhibitions in countries including Ecuador, Canada, China, the United States and Spain, and has participated in over 90 group exhibitions worldwide. His works are part of important public and private collections such as the National Museum of Ecuador, the Municipal Museum of Guayaquil, the American University Museum at the Katzen Art Center and the Museum of Modern Art of Cuenca. In addition to his studio practice, he has played a significant role as a curator and cultural manager. In 2019 he received the Hernán Crespo Toral Award for his contributions to the research, preservation and dissemination of Cuenca’s cultural heritage and collective memory.
