Álvaro Gabriel Díaz Rodríguez
Álvaro G. Díaz-Rodríguez is a musicologist, field recordist, and sound artist. He holds a PhD in Musicology from Universidad Católica Argentina and is a full-time Research Professor at the Autonomous University of Baja California (UABC), Mexico. His work focuses on sound studies, soundscapes, interdisciplinary art, cyberculture, and music, blending academic research with creative practice.
He has received awards such as the Sound of the Year Awards (British Library, 2021), Ecos Sonoros Award (Mexican Ministry of Culture, 2021), and Mention Spéciale at 60 Secondes Radio (Canada, 2021). He was selected for the 2022 Latin American Art Triennial in New York and is a member of Mexico’s National System of Researchers (CONACYT) and the National System of Art Creators (2023–2025).
His work has been exhibited in over 15 countries. His recordings of grey whales are featured in the exhibition “Ballena gris; Migrantes marinos” at the Tijuana Cultural Center and accompany the augmented reality experience of Mexico’s $500 peso bill. He also directs UABC’s Contemporary Music Ensemble and Chamber Orchestra, exploring how soundscapes reflect social contexts.
