Sergio Vega

Sergio Vega is an interdisciplinary artist from Buenos Aires, known for his project El Paraíso en el Nuevo Mundo, which explores the tensions between South American and European modernism. Inspired by the work of Antonio de León Pinelo, Vega traveled to Brazil, researching the mythology of Paradise and colonial discourses. Through photographs, videos, and installations, he reflects on the ambivalence between modern traditions and the ideologies of power. In his Social Landscapes series, presented at ARCOmadrid 2019, Vega overlays photographs of Brazilian spaces with abstract geometric compositions, creating a sculptural experience. Vega has participated in prestigious international biennials, such as the Cuenca Biennial (Ecuador) and the 51st Venice Biennale (Italy), and has received fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. He currently resides in the United States, where he is also a professor of photography and sculpture at the University of Gainesville, Florida.
