Jonathas de Andrade

Jonathas de Andrade (1982, Maceió, Brazil) is an artist and filmmaker based in Recife, Brazil. His works in video, photography, and installations explore the relationship between fiction and reality, tradition, and local communities. His art addresses social issues, crossing the fields of language and anthropology to challenge notions of truth, power, desire, and social imagination. He has held solo exhibitions like Jonathas de Andrade: Oeil—Flamme at Maat Lisbon (2023), Staging Resistance at Foam Amsterdam (2022), and The Fish at New Museum, New York (2017). His work has also been featured in major biennials, such as the 16th Istanbul Biennial (2019), the 32nd São Paulo Biennial (2016), and was showcased at the Guggenheim Museum New York in Under the Same Sun (2014). In 2022, he presented a solo project for the Brazilian Pavilion at the 59th Venice Biennale.
