Susana Arwas

Susana Arwas was born in Caracas, Venezuela. She studied architecture at Universidad Simón Bolívar and photography at the Instituto de Arte Federico Brandt, both in Caracas. Her multidisciplinary work spanned documentary photography, performance, editing and graphic design, with photographic essays centered on culinary, social and cultural subjects from an anthropological perspective. Among her notable projects is El sancocho de los diablos, on the collective culinary practice of the Chuao community in Aragua state, linked to its historical, cultural and religious context. Together with the Chuao community, she directed the Francisco Plánchez Documentation Center, dedicated to preserving the region cultural and environmental memory. She received the Luis Felipe Toro National Photography Prize in 1999 and the Goethe Institut Venezuelan Photography Prize and the Ministry of Culture Prize for best photographic work in 2007. She took part in the Havana Biennial and, in 2017, was selected among the artists of the first edition of BienalSur.
