Miguel Rothschild

Miguel Rothschild was born in 1963 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and lives and works between Buenos Aires and Berlin, Germany. He studied at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires from 1982 to 1987, and earned a master degree at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin between 1991 and 1994. His work spans photography, video, installation, painting and collage to address universal themes such as the sky, the sea and the night, in dialogue with iconographic traditions ranging from German Romanticism to Renaissance painting. Working from his own photographs, which he burns, perforates or cuts, the artist gives volume and materiality to incorporeal phenomena such as light or smoke. He has exhibited at institutions including the Berlinische Galerie, the Jüdisches Museum Berlin, the Centro Galego de Arte Contemporánea, Malba and the Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires. He received the Karl Hofer Prize in Germany and grants from the Civitella Ranieri Foundation and the Kunstfonds Foundation, along with residencies in Italy, the United States and Germany.
