Hito Steyerl
Born in Munich in 1966, Hito Steyerl is an artist and essayist renowned for her contributions to the field of media studies and the analysis of the mass circulation of images. She holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Vienna and serves as a professor of New Art Media at the University of the Arts in Berlin.
Steyerl’s essays, both written and audiovisual, delve into topics such as feminism, political violence, and digital technologies. Employing irony and the appropriation of visual and textual materials, her work critiques power structures and representation in contemporary society.
As an artist and documentarian, she has participated in major international biennials, and her works are part of prominent contemporary art collections and museums worldwide. In 2021, Steyerl was named one of the 100 most influential people in the art world by ArtReview. Her book The Wretched of the Screen has been translated into Spanish, solidifying her position as a leading thinker on digital imagery and its sociopolitical impact.
