On the occasion of the 25⁰ anniversary of the alliance between Berlin and Buenos Aires, and in the context of BIENALSUR 2019, at the MUNTREF Contemporary Art Center Immigrants Hotel, the exhibition "Immediately after and shortly before / 25 years Berlin-Buenos Aires" will be displayed.
Works by artists Eduardo Basualdo, Edith Dekyndt, Gabriela Golder and Marcel Odenbach make up this exhibition which questions as a whole the relationship between subjective and collective experience on both sides of the Atlantic, and the way in which they are transmitted. "Thus, the selected works highlight historical, economic and biographical fractures that shape cultural identity individually," explains exhibition curator Heike van den Valentyn.
With the general coordination of Cristina Sommer, this exhibition has the support of the Senate Chancellery of Berlin, the Federal Republic Embassy of Germany in Buenos Aires, the Goethe-Institut Buenos Aires and the Ministry of Culture of the City of Buenos Aires.
Marcel Odenbach's "Beweis zu nichts" (Proof of nothing) (1953) illuminates the turbulent history of the Buchenwald concentration camp memorial and its ideologized culture of remembrance.
In her work "Del otro lado" (On the other side), Gabriela Golder (b. 1971) uses the personal stories of refugees and migrants to create an imaginary space that establishes a direct link between the past and the present, between the Immigrant Hotel and the home countries of the emigrants.
Both the piece "They Shoot Horses (Part 2)" by Edith Dekyndt (b. 1960) and the monumental sculpture "Mother of the River" by Eduardo Basualdo (b. 1977) evoke silent images that make the elusive and inexpressible perceptible.
The title of the exhibition deliberately quotes the novel of the same name "Direkt danach und kurz davor", by Frank Witzel, about the silence of the post-war generation in Germany. "In the context of ideological instrumentalizations and economic crises, the exhibition highlights parallel experiences that shape societies on both continents and define the way we face today's challenges," notes Heike van den Valentyn.
"Immediately after and shortly before" can be visited until October 27 at the Contemporary Art Center Immigrants Hotel (Avenida Antártida Argentina 1355) and adds to the remarkable program that BIENALSUR 2019 will deploy from June 22 to 29 in the city of Buenos Aires, when it reaches its peak, due to the high concentration of artistic proposals inaugurated in museums, institutions and cultural centers as a result of the dialogue between the biennial and each of the venues.
