The southernmost point of the continent, the Province of Tierra del Fuego, will be the setting of the launch of the second edition of BIENALSUR 2019, the most outstanding cultural event from Argentina to the world. On May 20th, the cities of Río Grande and Ushuaia will be the starting point of the second edition of the biennial, whose artistic itinerary will include over 100 venues in 40 countries.
Once again, through the exhibitions of numerous artists from all over the world, the biennial will unfold its own unique cartography from Argentina to the world, including museums, cultural centres and works in the public space in venues located in Latin America, the Caribbean, North America, Europe, Africa and Asia.
“BIENALSUR is comparable to a road map that goes through different cities of our country and others. We wish to place other artistic itineraries on the map, thus disrupting all the rules”, pointed out Diana Wechsler, the Artistic and Academic Director of the biennial in the course of a meeting that she and Aníbal Jozami, the UNTREF Rector and General Director of BIENALSUR, had with the Governor of Tierra del Fuego, Rosana Bertone.
In this way, the International Contemporary Art Biennial of South America will land in Tierra del Fuego for the first time with the intention to continue presenting itself as a broad platform for exhibition and reflection upon contemporary art from South America to the rest of the world.
The choice of Tierra del Fuego for the kick-off of the event “arose from the wish to place BIENALSUR symbolically at the End of the World and to lay down other itineraries from this point”, added Wechsler during the meeting.
In its first edition in 2017, BIENALSUR presented an unprecedented format that simultaneously gathered around 400 artists in 32 cities of 16 countries through exhibitions held in 84 venues including museums, cultural centres and iconic public spaces, all of them with free admission.
Following the launch of BIENALSUR in the Province of Tierra del Fuego, there will be subsequent openings in the Province of Tucumán on May 25th, in Rosario on June 5th and 6th, in Switzerland on June 8th, in the Province of Córdoba on June 12th, and in several spaces in the City of Buenos Aires from June 24th to 29th. It will then extend to the whole world.
